A Q&A with Henri Kallio, who shares Helsinki’s most photographable secrets.

How do you find the unexpected angles of Helsinki?

Helsinki is one of the most walkable cities so slow down, look around, sneak into the courtyards, and search for the prettiest doorways or coolest façades. Beauty is in the everyday details.

If you could time travel into historical Helsinki, what year would you choose and why?

1917. Helsinki is one of the finest Jugend style or art nouveau cities and I would love to spend an afternoon exploring the architectural details and city life at the turn of the last century. Katajanokka and Ullanlinna are my favourite areas for architectural time travelling today.

Which three adjectives would you use to describe Helsinki?

My Helsinki is local, bold, and sincere. Just like us locals, Helsinki has the courage to maintain a unique personality.

What’s your favourite detail of the city?

The Finnish Museum of Natural History has the most spectacular spiral staircase in town, if not in the whole world. A true Helsinki secret.
