Ultima Thule: Fifty years and counting
Did you know that Iittala’s iconic Ultima Thule glassware was custom-designed for Finnair and made its debut on the 1969 maiden flight from Helsinki to New York City? And to this day, the frosty champagne glass is a key part of the passenger experience.
When Finnair passengers enjoy a beverage in Business Class, they wrap their fingers around a piece of Finnish design history – Iittala’s Ultima Thule glassware. Designed by Finnish designer and master sculptor Tapio Wirkkala, the classic frosty glass has been part of Finnair for 50 years, ever since the launch of the Helsinki to New York route on May 15, 1969.
This distinctive, glittering icicle-like ridged glassware has enchanted Finnair passengers for five decades– and long may it continue to accompany passengers on their adventures.
